TN.us - Mail your request to the office at the address shown below. For all requests for birth and death records, please include a photocopy of a government issued form of identification, which includes the requestor's signature.  Certificates requested through the mail are usually returned to the customer within two weeks of the day received.  The certificate of a recent birth, death, marriage or divorce is often not available from the Office of Vital Records until several weeks after the event.

Verification of Marriage Facts - For marriages prior to 1994, the groom's name is required for the search of the records. For marriages from 1994 to present, a search can be done using either the bride's maiden name or the groom's name.

Early Marriages in Tennessee - Marriage records in Tennessee have changed during its statehood. In many cases, the marriage license itself was given to the bride and groom. The official marriage record on file in the state will be an entry made into a marriage ledger book by the County Court Clerk. Generally, the clerk recorded only the names of the bride & groom, the minister or justice of the peace, and (sometimes) the bondsman. A limited number of counties began issuing duplicate marriage licenses in the 1880s.  Find out more.
